Mary shows a distinctly Spanish air in this reverent portrait. The artist lovingly recreates a portion of a work by Diego Rodrui­guez de Silva y Velasquez, actually in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. She is dressed in Baroque finery and a stylized halo frames her gracious face. "May the face of the Virgin always maintain this sweetness, this tenderness," the painter muses.
